A 26-year-old man from Chelstone, Lusaka, named Ephraim Banda, got caught pretending to be a soldier and a police officer. He was tricking people into joining a fake army. The police arrested him at Obama Plaza while he was wearing a fake army uniform and trying to scam job seekers with his phone. One victim, Bernard Hatembo, thought he was paying for a real army job when he sent K600 through Airtel Money. Banda even asked for more money for processing. After Bernard reported him, the police found fake messages on Banda’s phone about army recruitment. They also discovered he was lying about being connected to the Old Chelstone Police Post to make his scam seem real. The police warned everyone to be careful of people online claiming to recruit for the army or police. Banda is in jail now and will go to court soon for pretending to be someone he’s not and for scamming people.
