A 41-year-old man of Mugubudu Village in Chief Chanje’s Chiefdom, Chipangali District, has taken his own life by hanging himself in a grass-thatched kitchen under unclear circumstances.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, which occurred on the night of 13th August 2025 around 22:00 hours.

The deceased, identified as Paniso Banda, is reported to have spent the day in good health, sharing meals with his wife, Naomi Nkhoma, and their five children. After the family retired for the night, Mr Banda later woke up and briefly went outside before returning to bed without responding to his wife’s inquiry.

Commissioner Mweemba explained that when his wife awoke again around 22:00 hours, she discovered that her husband was missing. Upon searching outside, she found him hanging inside a grass-thatched kitchen a few metres from their main house.

Police officers who visited the scene found the body hanging with a string tied from the hood of the coat he was wearing. No physical injuries were observed, and the body has since been released to the family for burial.
