The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has announced that the Lumezi parliamentary by-election will take place on June 26, 2025.
This decision comes after the current independent MP, Munir Zulu, was found guilty and sent to prison. ECZ’s Corporate Affairs Manager, Patricia Luhanga, shared that nominations for the election will happen on May 27, 2025.
Along with the Lumezi by-election, there will also be two ward elections: one for Fibalala Ward in Milenge District and another for Tuuwa Ward in Sikongo District.
The Fibalala seat is open because Councillor Misheck Chisala passed away, and the Tuuwa seat is vacant due to Councillor Likezo Kaunga resigning.
Zulu was sentenced to a year in prison on April 7, 2025, for insulting Cabinet Ministers Charles Milupi and Situmbeko Musokotwane. People who want to run for office need to submit their nomination papers and declarations on May 27, 2025, between 9 AM and 3 PM.
Male candidates must pay a fee of K15,000, while female candidates will pay K13,500. All candidates must also show certified copies of their Grade 12 certificates or similar qualifications. Those backed by political parties need to provide adoption certificates signed by their party leaders.
Luhanga warned that not meeting these requirements could make a candidate’s nomination invalid.
The Commission also reminded voters who have lost or damaged their voter cards to get replacements at the nearest Continuous Voter Registration Centre, which is open from 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday to Friday.
