Four men arrested for possession, production Counterfeit

POLICE in Mansa District have arrested four men for being in possession of counterfeit currency, contrary to Section 369 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

The suspects were found with counterfeit Zambian Kwacha amounting to K59,100 and counterfeit United States dollars amounting to 4,400.

Luapula Province Police Commanding Officer, Mwala Yuyi, confirmed the arrests and identified the suspects as Gerald Lwando, 26, and Clever Chilambe, 30, both of Kalikeka Village in Chief Kalasa Lukangaba’s area, along with Innocent Chomba, 26, of New Mufulira Compound in Mansa.

The trio were apprehended in Kunda Mfumu village, Chembe District, after attempting to use counterfeit notes at a mobile money booth.

According to Mr. Yuyi, the suspects had hired a motorcycle from Mansa to Chembe where they attempted to pay the rider K500 via mobile money using counterfeit notes of which the booth operator noticed the fake currency and raised an alarm.

ZANIS reports that the suspects were apprehended by members of the public while attempting another transaction at a second booth and a search led to the recovery of counterfeit currency and arrest of the fourth suspect, Sydney Mubanga.

A search of Mubanga’s residence uncovered equipment allegedly used in the production of counterfeit notes.

All the four suspects are in police custody and will appear in court soon.
