Lieutenant General Oscar Nyoni, the Commander of the Zambia Air Force (ZAF), has highlighted Zambia’s strategic positioning through both regional and international partnerships aimed at enhancing national capacity, influencing policy, and contributing significantly to the global aerospace landscape.
During the 2025 Aerospace Power Conference held in Rome, Italy, Lt Gen Nyoni emphasized the necessity for Africa to assert its presence in the evolving aerospace sector, viewing it as a catalyst for economic development.
He remarked, “Africa must find its voice and space in the aerospace evolution,” and stressed that collaboration in today’s global security context is not merely optional but essential. “No single nation can afford to operate in isolation amidst the rapidly changing security landscape,” he added.
Referencing President Hakainde Hichilema’s statement that “insecurity anywhere is insecurity everywhere,” Lt Gen Nyoni reinforced the critical importance of global cooperation in maintaining peace and security.
In discussing innovation, he noted that the future of air and space power will increasingly depend on emerging technologies, including space-based systems, cyber capabilities, and artificial intelligence. He reaffirmed the ZAF’s dedication to investing in modern technology to ensure agility in a dynamic global environment.
“While technology is crucial, we must also prioritize leadership development, the ethical application of new technologies, and fostering a culture of excellence within our personnel,” he remarked.
Lt Gen Nyoni further acknowledged the significant role of satellite applications in critical areas such as agricultural surveillance, weather forecasting, logistics, and census operations, which serve as vital tools for Zambia’s socio-economic development.
He stated, “These investments are essential not only for defense but also for transforming our national economy,” advocating for strategic partnerships to enhance Zambia’s aerospace capabilities.
Additionally, he expressed confidence in the ongoing collaboration with Leonardo, a trusted aircraft supplier for Zambia. Headquartered in Italy, Leonardo supplies Zambia with the C-27 and SF-260 trainer aircraft and is renowned for its advanced aerospace systems and defense technologies.
“It has proven to be a reliable partner, and we are optimistic about acquiring additional platforms as we modernize our air force,” he noted, acknowledging Leonardo’s capacity for innovation and integrated solutions.
The 2025 Aerospace Power Conference brought together Air Chiefs and global strategic thinkers to discuss pressing issues of security, innovation, and partnerships within the aerospace domain. Hosted by the Italian Air Force, the event also showcased the strengthening defense and diplomatic ties between Zambia and Italy.
