Peter Kapala, the Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, has shared that the government is pushing for digital tracking systems for livestock. This is part of a bigger plan to improve disease monitoring and keep better track of animals.

While speaking at the fourth Lusaka Business Expo and Indaba, Mr. Kapala pointed out that using digital tools in managing livestock is really important for boosting productivity, raising farmers’ incomes, and helping small-scale farmers compete in local and global markets.

“The future of our livestock industry depends on modernization. By using technology, we can protect animal health and also provide farmers with better access to organized markets,” Mr. Kapala mentioned.

He also stressed the importance of making livestock and fisheries central to trade policies in the region and on the continent, calling for closer cooperation within the SADC and COMESA groups.

At the same time, Alexander Lawrence, the President of the Lusaka Chamber of Commerce, confirmed the Chamber’s goal to make Lusaka a lively center for trade and investment in the region.

“We need to change our thinking—agriculture isn’t just a fallback option or something for retirement. It’s a real, profitable business that can help change the economy,” Mr. Lawrence stated.
