Veteran Nigerian actor, Kanayo O Kanayo, has called on Zambian creatives to embrace their cultural roots and tell genuine African tales, emphasizing that there are no shortcuts to achieving success in the creative field.

While speaking to reporters after landing at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on Tuesday, the Nollywood star—famous for his memorable roles in African films—reflected on Nigeria’s long journey in developing one of the most lively film industries in the world.

“Good things don’t come easily,” Kanayo stated. “Nollywood didn’t just pop up out of nowhere. It took years of hard work, teamwork, and relentless effort—sweat and tears—for over 35 to 38 years to become what it is today.”

He urged Zambian artists to take lessons from Nigeria’s journey, especially by using local languages, customs, and cultural stories in their creations.

“Africa’s power is in its variety, and Zambia has the ability to share strong stories—if its artists stay focused and avoid copying foreign styles at the cost of their own identity,” he mentioned.

Kanayo added: “We are here to share our experiences—not for you to repeat our errors, but to inspire you to tell your own stories, wear your traditional clothing, enjoy your local cuisine, and bring your stories to the world stage.”

Kanayo expressed optimism for a flourishing Zambian creative industry that generates jobs and opportunities, highlighting the importance of innovation.

“In every field, the key is to innovate or perish. The Nigerian film industry changed from stage performances to screen productions—and adopted technology. That is the way to sustainability,” he explained.

Kanayo, who played a significant role in popularizing the ritual-themed genre in African cinema, arrived in Lusaka with fellow Nollywood actor Tony Umez ahead of the African Creatives Business Summit, which starts today and continues until June 27.
