The government has announced that it will keep the fishing ban on the Kafue River in place until it is completely sure that both the water and the fish are safe for people to eat.

Fisheries and Livestock Minister PETER KAPALA told Parliament that officials are being careful about the health risks, both now and in the future, due to a recent pollution problem where mining company Sino-Metals released acidic waste into the river.

Mr. KAPALA stressed that keeping the public healthy is the government’s main concern and warned that lifting the ban too soon could lead to unnecessary dangers.

He also mentioned that a consultant will be hired to do a thorough check of the river’s health to help decide what to do next.

The minister was answering a question from Lufubu Member of Parliament WESLEY KOLALA, who wanted to know why the fishing restrictions are still in place.
