BBC – Kenyan President William Ruto has announced that he will personally fund the construction of a church at his official residence in Nairobi, and he insists he has no reason to apologize.
“I will not seek anyone’s forgiveness for building a church. The devil might be upset and can do whatever he wants,” President Ruto stated on Friday.
This remark has sparked anger among Kenyans who are already dissatisfied with his leadership style and what they see as a mix of government and religion.
The BBC has reached out to the government for a response.
It’s unclear who Ruto meant by “the devil” in his remarks at State House, but he asserts that nothing will prevent the project from moving forward.
“I didn’t start the church’s construction when I came to the State House. I found a church that was just made of iron sheets. Does that seem appropriate for the State House?” a determined Ruto told politicians during a meeting he held on Friday.
On Friday, one of Kenya’s top newspapers, the Daily Nation, released architectural plans featuring a grand building with stained glass windows that can hold 8,000 people.
