A private company called Lufubu Power Company is going to build a hydro-power plant in Northern Province that will produce 163 megawatts of power.

The total cost for this project is 23.7 billion kwacha, which is about 800 million US dollars.

As stated by ZESCO’s Corporate Affairs Department to ZNBC News, the power plant will be located along the Lufubu River and will cover the districts of Mpulungu, Nsama, and Mporokoso.

The statement also mentions that a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) has been signed between ZESCO and Lufubu Power Company to ensure a steady supply of hydropower from the new plant.

ZESCO’s Managing Director, Justin Loongo, said this agreement supports the country’s goal of providing affordable and reliable energy, especially by using the untapped hydropower resources in the northern region.

To help connect the new plant to the national energy system, Mr. Loongo explained that ZESCO will build a new 330kV transmission line from Mporokoso to Kasama.

He added that this new infrastructure will improve grid stability and help deliver electricity to communities that currently lack it across the country.

Lufubu Power Company’s CEO, Katai Kachasa, expressed his support for the agreement, calling it a sign of trust from investors in Zambia’s renewable energy future.

Mr. Kachasa pointed out that Northern Province has a lot of rainfall and steady river flow, but it has not been fully used for energy production.

He mentioned that the Lufubu project aims to change this situation by making use of the region’s reliable water sources, which will help reduce dependence on the southern dams that are affect
