President Hakainde Hichilema has raised serious concern over the escalating security crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), reaffirming Zambia’s strong support for the deployment of the SADC Mission in the region.

In a statement delivered on his behalf by Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe at the SADC Troika Summit, President Hichilema thanked all member states that have contributed troops, resources and diplomatic backing to help stabilise the DRC.

“The deployment reflects regional solidarity and demonstrates SADC’s capacity to respond to threats against peace and sovereignty,” the Head of State emphasised.

He added that the end of Zambia’s tenure in the Organ Troika is a clear reaffirmation of the region’s shared commitment to peace, stability, democratic governance and cooperation.

Since assuming its place in the Organ Troika in August 2022, Zambia has worked closely with member states and the SADC Secretariat to promote conflict prevention, mediation, democratic consolidation and security cooperation across the region.

The high-level summit, which marked the conclusion of Zambia’s mandate, was chaired by Tanzanian Vice President Philip Isdor Mpango on behalf of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is the current Chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.

President Hichilema further underscored the importance of continued collective efforts in building a peaceful and secure region, urging SADC member states to remain united and focused in their response to emerging threats across the continent.

He reiterated that Zambia remains committed to supporting all regional initiatives aimed at safeguarding peace, promoting democracy and enhancing socio-economic development.
