Chiwempala Police Station reported a riot that broke out today, April 3, 2025, around 7:20 AM at Chiwempala Market.
Initial investigations reveal that a group of illegal miners tried to access an open pit for mining, which they typically do.
However, they were confronted by officers from the Zambia National Service (ZNS), who secured the area and prevented their entry.
This intervention angered the illegal miners, who claimed that their main issue was hunger, arguing that their means of making a living were being threatened.
In retaliation, the miners moved to Chiwempala Market, where they began looting shops and other businesses.
As word of the chaos spread, more illegal miners and local residents from various neighborhoods joined in, worsening the situation.
Businesses in Antelope, Maiteneke, Twatasha, Mikiloni, and Lulamba have been impacted, with reports of several shops and a bakery being looted.
The police acted quickly to restore order, resulting in the arrest of 62 individuals, who are now in custody.
The situation is currently under control, and normalcy has returned.
We encourage the public to refrain from participating in illegal activities and to allow law enforcement to uphold peace and order.
Ongoing investigations are in progress, and further updates will be shared as needed.
