A TEACHER who went missing with over K700,000 meant for the Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ) for GCE exam candidates has been caught at the Zombe Border Post while returning to Zambia from Uganda.
Last month, 35-year-old Elifas Banda, who is also a Reverend at a local church, reportedly took K713,600 in cash, which was supposed to be used for payments to the ECZ for GCE exam candidates, along with a Samsung phone worth K4,000.
In a statement, police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga announced that officers in Mbala arrested Mr. Banda at the border.
“The Zambia Police Service would like to inform the public that on April 3, 2025, police in Mbala, Northern Province, apprehended the suspect, Mr. Banda, at Zombe Border Post as he was coming back into Zambia from Uganda,” he stated.
Mr. Hamoonga confirmed that Mr. Banda is now in custody at Mbala Police Station.
He added that plans are being made to send officers from Matero Police Station to help transfer the suspect to Lusaka, where the case was first reported and is currently under investigation.
