After the heavy rains caused the Ndjili River to overflow on Friday, flooding hundreds of buildings in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the government has decided to handle the burial of the flood victims.
Reports indicate that 30 people lost their lives due to the flooding, while 20 others are in serious condition, and more than 5,000 homes have been destroyed.
Roger Kamba, the Minister of Public Health, Hygiene, and Social Welfare, stated that the government is also providing medical care and food for over 1,000 people affected by the floods.
“We have delivered kits to address current health needs and general treatment for up to 10,000 people. We have also provided water pumps because we noticed a lack of water, and we have brought food for those being assisted,” the minister explained to reporters on Monday.
“At Tata Raphael stadium, we currently have 595 people, but this number is changing, so we estimate around 600 there and about 400 at Lumumba school. In total, it could be close to 1,000 people receiving help.
“For those in hospitals, there are 20 patients at Vijana, and they are receiving treatment for free. We are not asking families to pay anything for the care of those affected,” the minister added.
