Former Defence Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM) was recently the subject of a viral death rumor. Today, social media was buzzing with claims about his death, prompting the government to act quickly to clarify the situation.
To ease the concerns, a press conference was held at Maina Soko Medical Centre, where GBM is currently receiving treatment. His supporters and family were relieved to see him alive and on the path to recovery.
Thabo Kawana, the Permanent Secretary for Information and Media, labeled the rumors as “irresponsible online chatter,” urging Zambians to be more careful with what they share on the internet. He was joined by GBM’s lawyer, Charles Changano, in a strong criticism of the sensationalism often found on social media.
“Despite what’s trending on Twitter and WhatsApp,” Kawana joked, “Mr. Mwamba is alive, stable, and doing well. He’s probably not too happy about today’s drama.
Kawana also warned that such false claims can create unnecessary fear and emotional pain for families and friends. He mentioned that the government is considering stronger cybersecurity measures, suggesting that those spreading these lies might face legal action soon.
On the other hand, GBM seemed to take the rumors lightly. Sources close to him say he remained calm and even found humor in the situation, seeing it as a strange part of being in the public eye in today’s digital world.
