A two-day-old baby was found dead, left in a ShopRite plastic bag in Chipata.

The police in Chipata are looking into a sad event where a newborn, thought to be only two days old, was found dead in a yellow ShopRite bag inside an unfinished house.

Robertson Mweemba, the Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer, confirmed this upsetting news, which took place on Sunday in the Moth Extension area, along Magwero Road, right across from Hebron Christian School.

Witnesses say a person named Emmanuel was going to the bathroom at the unfinished house when he found the baby. The baby was wrapped in a plastic bag and left there.

Shocked, Emmanuel told people at a nearby motorcycle stand, including a man named Majidu Banda. They tried to reach the local section chairman for help, but it was too late, and the baby was already dead.

Later that day, around 5 PM, two boys, ages 7 and 6, were picking up plastic near the same spot when they also found the body. But they were so scared that they didn’t say anything until the next morning.

Police reported that it was six-year-old Francis Banda who finally told his mom about what he saw. His parents quickly went to the place and confirmed that the baby was indeed there, where a crowd of worried neighbors had gathered.

The area chairman officially reported the situation to the police, and officers from Chipata Central Police came to check it out. The baby’s body has been taken to the Chipata Central Hospital mortuary.

A case file has been opened, and the police are investigating. So far, no one has been arrested.

Authorities are asking anyone who knows anything that could help find out who did this to come forward.
