Cardinal Robert Prevost Becomes First American Pope, Leo XIV

In a stunning turn of events, Cardinal Robert Prevost from the United States has been elected as the new leader of the Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. This announcement took place on May 8, 2025, during a momentous occasion at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

Shortly after white smoke was seen rising from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel—an unmistakable signal that a new pope had been selected—Prevost appeared on the balcony to a jubilant crowd gathered below. French Cardinal Dominique Mamberti joyfully proclaimed “Habemus Papam” (We have a pope), marking this historic moment for the 1.4 billion members of the Catholic community.

At 69 years old and hailing from Chicago, Prevost has dedicated much of his life to missionary work in Peru. Having been appointed a cardinal just two years prior in 2023, he has maintained a low profile, rarely engaging with the media or making public appearances.

Pope Leo XIV ascends as the 267th pope following the passing of Pope Francis, who was notable for being the first Latin American pope and worked tirelessly to modernize the Church during his 12-year tenure. Francis opened discussions on significant issues, including women’s ordination and the inclusion of LGBT Catholics, leaving behind a legacy of reform.

In the days leading up to the conclave, differing opinions emerged among the cardinals. Some sought to continue Francis’ legacy of openness, while others preferred a return to traditional practices.

During the conclave, cardinals remained isolated from the outside world, their devices confiscated, while they were relocated between voting sessions in the Sistine Chapel and accommodations nearby. The process of electing a pope saw initial votes on Wednesday with subsequent rounds on Thursday, culminating in the announcement as evening fell in Rome.

In recent conclaves, the average number of votes required for election has been around 7, with Pope Francis himself being selected after five rounds in 2013.
