Catholic priest in Italy is urging Zambia’s opposition political parties to be united.

Fr. Martin Mwango has noticed that the current divided state of the opposition is making it harder for them to effectively check and balance the government, which he believes is crucial for a healthy democracy.

He stated, “The way the opposition is acting separately is harmful to democracy,” and he called for action to fix the leadership crisis that he feels is too significant to overlook.

He made it clear that his message is not about politics or favoritism but comes from a genuine concern for a more organized and trustworthy opposition that can play a meaningful role in governing the nation.

Fr. Mwango also expressed worry about what he calls a “leadership crisis” within the opposition, warning that without a clear leadership plan, there is no confidence or real alternatives to the current government.

He has encouraged opposition leaders to get their act together by selecting trustworthy leaders who can compete fairly to help protect Zambia’s democracy through strong multiparty involvement.

Fr. Mwango believes that without a strong opposition, voters face a crisis because they are not given the chance to choose the leaders they want.

“In 2021, the Zambian people voted decisively for an opposition party because it was solid, united, and inspired confidence and hope,” he said, stressing the importance of maintaining that under a united and well-organized opposition.
