CCMG criticizes ECZ for banning PF clothing in Mfuwe by election
The Christian Churches Monitoring Group (CCMG) has strongly criticized the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) for stopping the New Congress Party (NCP) from wearing Patriotic Front (PF) clothing during the campaigns for the upcoming Mfuwe Parliamentary by-election.
Recently, the ECZ told the NCP—who is in an alliance with the PF and other parties in the Tonse Alliance—not to use PF-branded items during their campaign activities. However, CCMG argues that this order has no legal support and goes against the principles of democratic participation.
CCMG Program Director, Peter Mwanangombe, mentioned that the Electoral Process Act does not have any rule that stops the use of another party’s clothing during campaigns, even when they are in alliances. He pointed out Section 2 of the Act, which states that campaign materials can include clothing, symbols, manifestos, and images that represent a candidate or political party.
“It is legally and practically acceptable for alliance members to wear the clothing of partner parties when campaigning for a shared candidate,” Mr. Mwanangombe said. “This shows unity and teamwork within political alliances.”
He has called on the ECZ to reconsider its decision and create an environment that supports freedom of association, expression, and the democratic rights of political groups to collaborate during elections.
