Chamanga to retire his football career.
After an illustrious career spanning over two decades and touching four continents, James ‘Jemba Jemba’ Chamanga, the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner, will take his final bow from professional football this afternoon at Nkoloma Stadium.
At 44 years old, the Red Arrows striker, celebrated for his precise finishing and unwavering passion on the pitch, will play his last match as Red Arrows compete against Zanaco in a pivotal Week 34 MTN Super League fixture. This match signifies the end of an era, not only for Chamanga but for Zambian football as a whole.
Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Chamanga shared his heartfelt gratitude for the opportunities the sport has provided him, while acknowledging that he will miss the love and support from Zambian fans the most.
“On the international stage, I will miss the fame, but locally, I will truly miss the drums. I will miss the supporters and the celebrations—the dancing and singing that follow a goal,” he remarked. “Playing brings a different joy compared to coaching or watching from the stands. Those are the moments I will cherish the most.”
Chamanga’s career began with Makumbi Stars before he ventured abroad, showcasing his talent in South Africa and China, and eventually returning to solidify his legacy at home. His final match against his former club, Zanaco, adds a poignant touch to his farewell.
As Red Arrows gear up to celebrate a successful season, this fixture carries significant implications for Zanaco, who face the looming threat of relegation to National Division One. Ironically, Chamanga may deliver the decisive blow to the club that played a crucial role in his career.
Kick-off is set for 15:00 hours, with complimentary entry for fans in honor of the veteran striker. As supporters prepare to fill Nkoloma Stadium, the vibrant sounds of drums and chants will resonate one last time for a man who dedicated himself wholeheartedly to Zambian football.
