The Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) is urging an end to the sale of sexual boosters, as they believe this practice is leading to more cases of sexual abuse in the community.
Emmanuel Chikoya, the general secretary of CCZ, is against the idea of selling sexual boosters like they are candy on the streets. He wants the government to take action to stop this issue.
Father Chikoya has emphasized the need for zero tolerance towards the public advertising of sexual boosters, including in the media.
“Your honor, Vice-President, we must put a stop to the sale of sexual boosters in Zambia, which are being treated like sweets.
“We should not allow anyone to promote strange types of boosters or witchdoctors, including through media and print. We need to completely reject these things.”
He also mentioned that there are better ways to earn a living than by selling and advertising sexual boosters.
During a national protest against sexual and gender-based violence, Father Chikoya pointed out that the Church has a role to play in this issue, acknowledging that some clergymen are involved in sexual violence.
“I agree that the Church can be part of the solution, but it is also part of the problem due to some pastors who I would call poachers.
“We will stand firmly against these poachers in the pulpit and in confessionals. Long live the girl child, long live the boy child! Together, we will overcome and will never be defeated, amen!” Father Chikoya stated.
Earlier, many protesters carrying signs gathered at the Zesco flyover bridge and marched through the central business district, eventually meeting Vice-President Mutale Nalumango at the High Court roundabout.
The group, which included members of civil society, the Church, artists, and students, presented a petition to Ms. Nalumango, demanding harsher penalties for those who commit sexual violence.
Beauty Katebe from the Non-Governmental Gender Organisations Coordinating Council called for changes in the law to ensure that those guilty of child defilement do not receive bail or bond.
