What started as a fast attempt to get away from the police ended with a wet surrender when two suspected drug traffickers drove their car into a stream while trying to escape from the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Livingstone.
According to a statement from DEC Public Relations Officer Allan Tamba, the Commission was conducting an operation in the tourist city when the suspects, trying to avoid being caught, lost control of their car, which went off the road and into a stream.
The two men—Eliud Ngombo, who is 25 years old, and Manfred Sidamba Nyama, who is 30—were quickly pulled from the water by the same DEC officers they were trying to escape from and were taken into custody.
“When officers got the suspects and their car out, they found 20 kilogrammes of loose cannabis hidden inside,” Tamba said.
Further investigations led DEC officers to the suspects’ home, where they found another 14 kilogrammes of cannabis, making a total of 34 kilogrammes of illegal drugs taken.
The suspects are now in legal custody and will go to court soon.
“The Commission wants to confirm its strong commitment to fighting drug trafficking and related crimes to make sure we have a safe environment that helps our national development,” Tamba said, while encouraging the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activities.
This exciting event adds to the increasing number of drug-related arrests as the DEC steps up its nationwide fight against illegal drug activities.
