ECL Burial: Government contacts the LUNGU family
The government is eager to find a quick and friendly solution regarding the burial of Former President Edgar Lungu before the court makes a decision on the issue.
Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, mentioned that the Attorney General, through lawyers in South Africa, has reached out to Mr. LUNGU’s family to try and resolve the situation without going to court.
Mr. Mweetwa stated that this is important for many Zambians who wish to say goodbye to the Former President.
Mr. Mweetwa, who is also the Minister of Information and Media, shared this on “Face the Nation,” a current affairs show on SABC.
Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha, with the help of lawyers in South Africa, has filed a public interest case against the burial of the former President in South Africa.
The court has instructed Mr. Kabesha to officially submit an application by July 3, 2025, to request that President Lungu’s remains be brought back.
The Lungu family has until July 4, 2025, to respond.
The court has scheduled the hearing for the application on July 18, 2025.
