FAZ Moves to Renegotiate $1.1 Million Debt Owed to Former Coach Aljosa Asanovic
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has begun talks with key stakeholders to renegotiate the payment terms of a $1.1 million debt owed to former Chipolopolo head coach, Aljosa Asanovic.
This move comes after FAZ lost an appeal in a case where the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, in 2023, ruled that the association must compensate Asanovic for breach of contract.
In 2024, the Court of Arbitration for Sport instructed FIFA to suspend all funding to FAZ until the outstanding amount is fully paid. The funding freeze has dealt a major blow to football development in Zambia, limiting the association’s ability to implement its programs.
FAZ President Keith Mweemba explained that the current executive, in collaboration with FIFA, is pursuing a renegotiation with Asanovic to agree on a more sustainable repayment plan.
Speaking to ZNBC Sport, Mweemba emphasized that the $1.1 million debt poses a serious threat to the association’s financial stability and could potentially deplete its resources.
Asanovic was appointed as Chipolopolo coach on January 18, 2022, but left the role in September of the same year.
