The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has reaffirmed its belief in Zambia’s ability to produce Grandmasters, stressing that adequate investment and international exposure are key to achieving this goal.

FIDE Management Board Deputy Chairperson and Grandmaster, Dana Reiznie-Ozola, noted that with structured education and stronger social engagement in chess, Zambia has the potential to develop players who can compete and excel at the highest level.

Reiznie-Ozola underscored the need to advance women’s participation in the sport, pointing out that Zambia has yet to produce a female Grandmaster. She urged relevant stakeholders to focus on initiatives that will help bridge this gap.

Currently visiting Zambia, the FIDE official recently attended the 2025 Zambia Rapid Women’s Chess Championship in Lusaka, where she interacted with local players and officials.

Chess Federation of Zambia President, Leslie Chikuse, expressed optimism that hosting a Grandmaster like Reiznie-Ozola will motivate more women to strive for excellence in chess.

At the same event, Zambian player Neta Sipalo highlighted that chess has evolved into a safe and empowering space for women and girls across the country.
