First Quantum minerals- committed to environment protection

First Quantum Minerals–Trident Limited (FQM-TL) has reiterated its dedication to sustainable mining practices and economic empowerment of local communities in North-Western Province.

Speaking during a recent tour of the mine, FQM-TL Assistant General Manager Frederic Wouters emphasized that environmental stewardship remains a top priority for the company.

“As a company, we are committed to ensuring environmental protection remains central to our mining operations,” Mr Wouters stated.

He explained that the company has implemented several measures to safeguard surrounding communities and ecosystems from the potential impact of mining activities.

In addition to environmental safeguards, FQM-TL has launched wildlife conservation initiatives within its operational areas, reflecting the company’s holistic approach to sustainability.

Mr Wouters further disclosed that over 270 local residents have been employed by Trident Limited in 2025 alone.

The company, he said, is actively investing in human capital by providing vocational training at tertiary institutions, with the aim of integrating more locals into its workforce.

Meanwhile, Trident Limited Environmental Manager Kachiwala Sapalo said the company has adopted advanced technologies to foster a mining environment where both productivity and nature can thrive.

“To support sustainability, we have invested in recycling equipment to significantly reduce the volume of waste going to landfills,” said Mr Sapalo.

He noted that the company’s recycling initiative is a key part of its broader strategy to promote eco-friendly operations.

As part of its local economic empowerment strategy, FQM-TL has also established a Business Incubation Centre aimed at supporting Zambian entrepreneurs.

According to Community Affairs Manager Joseph Ngwira, the initiative—developed in partnership with the Citizen Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) and Prospero—will provide business training to 20 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) over a two-year period.

“This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of empowering small and medium enterprises. Our goal is to nurture these businesses so they can supply goods and services to the mine.
