Girls tragically drowned in Kawambwa
The three girls at Kalamba Primary School, and Beauty Mwansa, a grade nine student at Ntumba Chushi Secondary School, lost their lives.
Police Commissioner Mwala Yuyi confirmed the incident, which occurred on Monday, April 21, 2025. He mentioned that the girls were swimming with four others who managed to escape.
The group had gone to the quarry after it filled with rainwater, but while four girls swam to safety, the three got stuck in the mud and drowned.
Luapula Province Minister Nason Musonda expressed the government’s sorrow over the girls’ deaths, especially after a recent incident where 11 workers from Kawambwa Sugar also died in similar conditions.
He visited the families to offer condolences and promised support from the government. The bodies were recovered by the Marine Commandos, and their burial was scheduled for today.
