Government Plans Gold Super Cooperative Structure

Government Plans Gold Super Cooperative Structure

The government is planning to create a national super cooperative structure that will focus on Zambia’s gold-rich mining regions.

Hapenga Kabeta, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Mines, states that this new model will bring together chairpersons of current mining cooperatives in each area that produces gold.

Dr. Kabeta mentions that establishing a well-organized framework will enhance government support for small-scale and artisanal miners.

He explains that the gold-centered super cooperative will improve coordination, broaden training programs, and provide better access to modern mining tools, specifically designed for the needs of gold miners.

Dr. Kabeta also points out that this initiative will help to formalize mining activities while encouraging safer and more efficient mining methods.

During a meeting with Planet Gold Zambia, Dr. Kabeta highlighted that the initiative will focus on mercury-free gold processing technologies to protect both the health of miners and the environment.

On the other hand, Abigail Mwailenge, the National Project Manager for Planet Gold Zambia, expressed her support for the proposed structure.

Ms. Mwailenge noted that this initiative is in line with global efforts in 27 countries aimed at assisting artisanal gold miners.

This information comes from a statement released to ZNBC News by Shawinga Tembo, the Principal Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Mines.
