HH Advocates for African Solutions in Medicine Production
President Hakainde Hichilema has urged an end to Africa’s reliance on donor aid for medical supplies, asserting that the continent must take control of its health systems by producing essential medicines locally.
During a meeting with officials from the End Malaria Council (EMC) at State House, President Hichilema stressed the importance of enhancing domestic manufacturing capabilities for medical equipment, drugs, and vaccines—especially for diseases such as malaria and cholera.
“It is unacceptable that African countries continue to depend on donors for medicines we are capable of producing ourselves,” President Hichilema remarked.
He revealed that the government has made significant progress in developing and financing the production of a local cholera vaccine, and similar initiatives will now focus on addressing malaria.
The Head of State also emphasized the necessity for increased public awareness and sustainable interventions in the fight against malaria, reaffirming his government’s commitment to advancing health security through local innovation and self-reliance.
