President Hakainde Hichilema has given presidential pardons to 943 inmates to celebrate Africa Freedom Day, showing Zambia’s dedication to forgiveness, justice reform, and national unity
The group of pardoned inmates consists of 882 men and 61 women.

This includes 10 elderly prisoners, 10 women who have children, and one long-term inmate whose sentence was cut down from 15 years to 9 years. The announcement was made by Jack Mwiimbu, the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, in Monze District.

These pardons, which were given under Article 97 of the Zambian Constitution, show the government’s focus on restorative justice and rehabilitation. Mwiimbu called the President’s action a reminder of the values of forgiveness and reconciliation that are important for Africa Freedom Day.

He also pointed out Zambia’s wider efforts in justice reform, like setting up mobile courts in correctional facilities—this is meant to help reduce overcrowding in prisons and make it easier for inmates to get legal help. These changes are being made with the help of organizations like the Judiciary of Zambia and the Legal Aid Board.

Mwiimbu also encouraged communities to help former inmates reintegrate by providing jobs, housing, and access to important services.
“By welcoming these individuals, we are creating a spirit of reconciliation that makes our society stronger,” he said.
