He family of the late former President Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu has officially shared that his funeral and burial will take place in South Africa, following their wish for a private ceremony.

In a statement from family spokesperson Hon. Makebi Zulu, the Lungu family described this time of mourning as “very emotional,” and they expressed their thanks for the many messages of sympathy they have received from Zambia, the African continent, and around the world.

“We especially want to thank the Government of the Republic of South Africa for their respectful support and for honoring our choice to have a private funeral and burial here,” the statement says in part.

The family also praised South African officials for not interfering and for respecting both the country’s laws and the Lungu family’s wish to grieve peacefully and with dignity.

The visit from South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Hon. Ronald Lamola, who brought condolences from President Cyril Ramaphosa, was called “heartwarming.”

The Lungu family asked for unity and calm among Zambians, urging the public to respect their choice for a private service. “The family is looking for peace and unity among fellow Zambians during this time and thanks all friends, supporters, and the public for their understanding,” the statement continues.
