Mansa Airport Upgrade Nears Completion as Government Finalizes Compensation Plans
The Zambian government has announced that compensation arrangements for families affected by the Mansa Airport upgrade are nearing completion, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing infrastructure development.
Minister of Transport and Logistics, Frank Tayali, confirmed that the government is in the final stages of planning compensation for communities impacted by the upgrade of Mansa Airport in Luapula Province. Speaking during a site visit, Mr. Tayali expressed satisfaction with the progress made by China Jiangsu International, the contractor handling the runway modernization.
He highlighted that key infrastructure elements—such as the asphalt plant, cement mixer, and concrete mixing systems—are now fully operational. According to the minister, these developments indicate that the project is on track for timely completion, positioning it as a crucial enabler of regional connectivity and economic growth.
Meanwhile, Luapula Province Minister Nason Musonda emphasized the strategic importance of the upgraded airport in enhancing the province’s fast-growing agriculture and tourism sectors. He referenced the Green 2000 agriculture project in Luena Farm Block, Kawambwa, which is preparing for its first harvest of export-quality avocados. Mr. Musonda stated that the new airport will enable the efficient movement of goods using larger commercial aircraft, helping local farmers access international markets.
He also noted that the return of commercial flights to the province is expected to increase tourist arrivals to popular attractions such as Lumangwe Falls and Lake Bangweulu. Additionally, the airport upgrade has generated employment opportunities for local residents, contributing to the province’s socio-economic development.
The Mansa Airport upgrade is part of Zambia’s broader commitment to improving national infrastructure and promoting regional development.
