Mopani copper mine PLC announces the return of the IRH Mopani challenge cup
Gareth Taylor, the Director of Operations at International Resources Holdings (IRH), has pointed out how the success of top clubs in Zambia’s league is linked to the national team’s achievements. He emphasized the importance of the IRH-Mopani Challenge Cup.
Taylor mentioned that the progress of Nkana Football Club and Mufulira Wanderers FC could have a positive effect on the Chipolopolo’s performance.
He highlighted that Nkana finished third in the league last season, which is a big improvement, while Mufulira Wanderers ended up in eighth place, showing they are getting better compared to previous years.
He thinks that if these clubs keep improving, it could help the national team.
In other news, Charles Sakanya, the Chief Executive Officer of Mopani Copper Mine PLC, has announced that the IRH Mopani Challenge Cup is coming back for its second edition.
Sakanya stated that the tournament will include senior men’s teams, youth development teams, and women’s teams. It is scheduled to happen on July 19, 2025, at Nkana Stadium, with the second leg planned for August 2, 2025, at Shinde Stadium, which is the home ground of Mufulira Wanderers FC.
According to Sakanya, the goal of the tournament is to encourage talent development, inclusivity, and diversity in sports, while also building a sense of community and promoting teamwork, discipline, and fair play.
The winner of the tournament will receive K150,000, while the runners-up will get K70,000.
