Johannesburg, South Africa – Member of Parliament Ghaleb Cachalia has issued a stern warning to South African Police Service (SAPS) officers, cautioning that they could face dismissal if they fail to uphold justice.
Cachalia emphasized that the public’s trust in law enforcement is at risk, urging officers to act with integrity and accountability. He said the government cannot tolerate corruption, negligence, or abuse of power within SAPS ranks, as such conduct undermines the justice system.
“We cannot allow those entrusted with the responsibility to protect citizens to betray that trust,” Cachalia stated. “If justice is not served, consequences will follow.”
The MP’s remarks come amid growing concerns over police misconduct and a surge in public complaints regarding delayed investigations and wrongful arrests. Civil society groups have also called for stricter measures to ensure officers act within the law.
Cachalia further warned that internal disciplinary processes would be enforced without fear or favor, stressing that no one is above the law — including law enforcement officers themselves.
The warning has sparked mixed reactions, with some praising the MP for taking a firm stance, while others question whether political statements will translate into real change within SAPS.
