Mpika 57-year-old woman takes her own life after fight with husband

A sad atmosphere has taken over Chitulika settlement in Mpika District after a 57-year-old woman named Katherine Chewe is believed to have committed suicide.

Muchinga Province Police Commissioner Dennis Mola stated that this incident happened on the evening of July 8, 2025, after Chewe had a disagreement with her husband, who suggested she cut back on her drinking.

The police were informed about the situation by 75-year-old Raphael Mutale Tamiya, a local resident of Chitulika village, who reported it at around 08:30 on July 9.

When police officers arrived at the scene, they found Chewe’s body hanging from a roofing pole in her poultry house, with a mosquito net rope around her neck.

Chewe was last seen on the night of July 8 when she was cooking outside the house. Her 24-year-old sister, Margaret Kangwa, found her the next morning.

“Initial investigations indicate that the deceased had a fight with her husband about her drinking just before the incident,” Commissioner Mola confirmed.

Her body has been taken to the Mpika Urban Clinic mortuary, and the police have started an investigation. There is no suspicion of foul play at this time, but the family has been told to bury her and mark the grave in case it needs to be opened later.
