MPUNDU SAYS THE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT BILL WILL GO THROUGH EVEN WITH OPPOSITION PUSHBACK

Nkana Independent MP Binwell Mpundu believes that the opposition parties do not have enough members in Parliament to stop the proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill.

His comments came after Caritas Zambia Director Fr Gabriel Mapulanga urged lawmakers last week to reject the Bill if they truly care about its controversial parts.

Fr Mapulanga made this request right after the government announced Bill No. 7 of 2025, which has already caused a lot of public discussion. He also asked civil society groups and experts in constitutional law to carefully examine the proposed changes.

Many different groups have expressed worries about when the Bill is being introduced, warning that moving forward with these changes now could damage public trust. Some have even accused the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) of trying to manipulate the Constitution to keep their power.

However, when asked about Fr Mapulanga’s request and if opposition MPs could gather enough votes to stop the Bill, Mpundu said it was not likely.

“The truth is that the opposition does not have the numbers to block the Bill. Considering the current makeup of Parliament, it is very likely that the proposed amendment will pass and become law,” Mpundu said.
