Mweetwa Defends UPND’s Development Record, Urges Opposition to Acknowledge Tangible Progress

Lsaka, Zambia – July 28, 2025 — United Party for National Development (UPND) Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa has strongly defended the ruling party’s development record, accusing opposition leaders and some citizens of deliberately ignoring the government’s achievements due to political bias.

In an exclusive interview with Phoenix News, Mweetwa criticized political opponents for prioritizing “theatrics over facts,” arguing that the UPND administration under President Hakainde Hichilema has made significant strides since taking office in 2021.

Key Development Achievements Under UPND

Highlighting the government’s performance, Mweetwa pointed to several notable accomplishments, including:

  • The successful rollout of free education across the country
  • Restoration and expansion of university meal allowances and bursaries
  • Clearance of long-standing retirement benefits
  • Revitalization efforts in Zambia’s mining and textile sectors

“These achievements are not just promises—they are tangible outcomes that are changing lives,” Mweetwa stated.

Economic Reforms and Debt Management

Addressing economic concerns, the UPND spokesperson underscored the administration’s success in ongoing debt restructuring negotiations. He also mentioned that efforts to reduce the cost of living are yielding results, with continued reforms in agriculture and energy sectors offering sustainable alternatives to traditional revenue sources like mining.

“We are laying a foundation for long-term economic stability and job creation,” Mweetwa said, adding that these reforms are designed to empower citizens and drive inclusive growth.

Mweetwa Challenges Opposition to Offer Policy Solutions

Calling for more constructive political engagement, Mweetwa urged opposition leaders to contribute meaningful policy alternatives instead of resorting to what he described as “baseless criticism.” He emphasized that Zambia’s path to prosperity hinges on collaboration, measurable results, and policy-driven governance.

“Our progress cannot be denied. The question now is: Will the opposition rise to the occasion with ideas, or continue to criticize for the sake of it?” Mweetwa asked.
