Kasama, Zambia – The Zambian Government has revealed that more than 1.3 million citizens are now benefiting from the Social Cash Transfer Programme, marking a significant expansion from just 4,600 beneficiaries in 2021.
Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Doreen Mwamba, described the growth as a major milestone in the fight against poverty and social vulnerability. She made the remarks in Kasama during a courtesy call on Northern Province Permanent Secretary Bernard Mpundu.
Mr. Mpundu used the occasion to highlight pressing challenges in the province, including a shortage of vehicles for the Department of Social Welfare and the urgent need for 500 wheelchairs for people living with disabilities.
In response, Mrs. Mwamba assured that the government is committed to addressing these issues. She announced that new vehicles will soon be deployed to strengthen social welfare operations in the Northern Province. Additionally, she confirmed that 100 wheelchairs will be delivered to support persons with disabilities in the region.
The minister later flagged off a vehicle assigned to Social Welfare duties in Nsama District, reaffirming the government’s pledge to improve access to social services nationwide.
The Social Cash Transfer Programme is a key government initiative aimed at providing regular financial support to vulnerable households, helping them meet basic needs such as food, healthcare, and education.
