Around 3,569 hectares of land at Palabana University in Chongwe district have been taken over by unauthorized users. This means the university now has only 231 hectares left.
While speaking to the students, President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA announced that the government will take back the land from those who have encroached on it.
He mentioned that once the land is returned, the university can start agricultural activities, which will help with food security.
The President’s comments came after an appeal from Palabana University Vice Chancellor, VERNON CHINENE, who asked for the land to be reclaimed.
Additionally, President HICHILEMA stated that a solar mini-grid plant will be set up at the university to provide a continuous supply of electricity.
He instructed Technology and Science Minister FELIX MUTATI to ensure the solar project is completed.
During the same meeting, Palabana University Student Union President, COLLINS BWALYA, expressed gratitude to President HICHILEMA for including the university in the Higher Education Student Loans program.
