President Hakainde Hichilema has confirmed that his government will work with the Catholic Church by promising K800,000 for the 120th anniversary celebrations of Lubwe Mission, which is set to happen on 28 June 2025 in Chifunabuli District, Luapula Province.
This promise was made during a fundraising dinner on 31 May, where the President was represented by Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Hon. Peter Kapala. The event gathered senior government officials, Catholic clergy, and community leaders to honor one of Zambia’s oldest mission stations.
While reading the President’s message, St Joseph’s Parish Priest, Father Mukobekwa, expressed thanks for the Head of State’s generous support, which is very important as preparations ramp up for the big celebration.
At the event, Hon. Kapala honored the early Catholic missionaries who started the mission in 1905 at Chankasupa Village, calling their legacy “a seed of faith that has grown into a lively diocese with 12 parishes serving the people of Luapula Province.”
He also highlighted how important it is for the Church and State to work together to promote social and moral growth.
“The Church gives us the moral guidance, while the government offers the policy direction and resources. By collaborating, we can achieve sustainable development that includes everyone,” he stated.
Besides the presidential promise, Hon. Kapala also personally donated 200 bags of mealie meal and two heads of cattle for the upcoming celebrations.
Present at the event were Luapula Province Minister Hon. Nason Musonda, UPND Provincial Chairperson Alfred Mwape, Chifunabuli District Commissioner Stanley Mukosa, priests, nuns, and other local leaders who all called for unity and teamwork.
As we get closer to the historic anniversary, people from both the Church and government are working together to make it a success.
