Super Falcons Make Dramatic Comeback to Clinch WAFCON Title

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have claimed the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title after a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over Morocco in the final, securing their record-extending 10th WAFCON championship.

The final, played in front of a vibrant crowd, saw Morocco take a 2-0 lead at halftime through goals from captain Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanna Massoudy, putting Nigeria under immense pressure.

However, the Super Falcons responded with resilience and tactical brilliance in the second half. Esther Okoronkwo converted a penalty in the 64th minute to reduce the deficit, igniting hope for Nigeria.

Seven minutes later, Folasade Ijamilusi struck the equalizer, leveling the game at 2-2. Then in the 88th minute, substitute Jennifer Echegini netted the winning goal, completing a remarkable turnaround and sealing Nigeria’s 3-2 victory.

Nigeria head coach Justin Madugu praised his team’s determination and highlighted the importance of the second-half tactical adjustments that turned the game around.

On the other side, Morocco’s coach Jorge Vilda, a former Women’s World Cup-winning coach with Spain, commended his team’s first-half performance but admitted that second-half errors cost them the title. He noted that WAFCON remains one of the most competitive tournaments in African football.

This win cements Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football, as they continue to lead the WAFCON title tally with 10 championships, reinforcing their legacy as the continent’s most successful women’s team.
