The best Laptop to buy for engineering courses.
This post aims to assist those who are uncertain about which laptop to purchase for their engineering studies. Recently, I conducted some research on this subject and would like to share my insights.
For those on a budget, I recommend considering a minimum of 65,000 BDT. At this price point, you can find reliable laptops that do not include dedicated graphics cards. Aim for at least an Intel Core i5 (12th Gen) or AMD Ryzen 5 (5000 series), paired with 16 GB DDR4 RAM and 512 GB SSD storage.
This configuration should adequately support students in CSE, EEE, IPE, and TE, provided you do not plan to engage in 3D-based projects. You will be able to utilize software such as MATLAB and manage basic AutoCAD tasks effectively. However, please note that it may struggle with 3D work, which is crucial for students in Civil and Mechanical Engineering.
If you can extend your budget to approximately 90,000–150,000 BDT, you will discover significantly better options. This price range allows you to invest in a more future-proof and versatile laptop. Here, you can find models equipped with dedicated graphics cards and DDR5 RAM. Specifically, laptops featuring NVIDIA RTX 2050, 3050, or 4050 are ideal for running demanding software like AutoCAD, MATLAB, and SolidWorks, especially for those in Civil and Mechanical Engineering, where graphics performance is paramount.
Considering that laptops have limited upgrade options, it is wise to invest in a higher-quality model from the outset, if feasible. A laptop with a dedicated GPU will adequately serve you for at least four years and will facilitate smoother learning in skill-based areas such as graphics, simulations, or programming.
As a friendly reminder, when you are ready to make your purchase, always buy from reputable and trusted retailers. Exercise caution, as some shops in BCS Computer City, Multiplan Center, or other computer markets may attempt to sell older-generation products. Always verify the specifications to ensure the laptop includes at least an Intel i5 (12th Gen or newer) and 16 GB DDR4 RAM. Additionally, pay attention to warranty policies and after-sales service. If you encounter a good model with only 8 GB RAM, consider upgrading it to 16 GB later.
