The Cabinet is sending security forces to fight against illegal mining.
The Cabinet has decided to send security personnel to places affected by illegal mining activities.
This action is meant to tackle illegal mining operations in areas where gold and other valuable minerals have been found throughout the country.
The decision was made during the 12th Cabinet Meeting on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at State House, where they talked about laws and policies.
Cabinet noticed an increase in illegal mining activities involving different minerals like gold, manganese, copper, sugilite, and lithium, mostly done by small-scale and artisanal miners.
They also pointed out that illegal mining has caused other illegal activities, such as mineral smuggling, pollution of the environment, and an increase in foreign nationals coming into Zambia.
This information was shared by the Minister of Information and Media, Cornelius Mweetwa, during a press conference in Lusaka today.
Mr. Mweetwa also mentioned that the Cabinet has approved a new bill called the Anti-Gender-Based Violence (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
This bill is designed to make enforcement better by clearly defining what gender-based violence is, setting specific punishments for offenders, and improving enforcement methods.
In addition, the Cabinet has agreed to publish and introduce several other bills to Parliament during this session:
Zambia Institute of Procurement and Supply Bill, 2025 – to improve rules and professional standards in procurement and supply.
Cotton Bill, 2025 – to enhance oversight and growth of the cotton industry.
Lands and Deeds Registry Bill, 2025 – to give the Chief Registrar the power to cancel title certificates and update land registration processes.
Teaching Profession Bill, 2025 – to keep the Teaching Council of Zambia active and redefine its roles.
