(BBC) This peace deal is meant to put an end to many years of terrible fighting between the two neighboring countries, and it might also give the US a chance to access valuable minerals.
The agreement requires the armed groups in eastern DR Congo to disengage, disarm, and possibly integrate under certain conditions.
There aren’t many details available, and past peace agreements in the area have not worked out, but that hasn’t stopped the US and Congolese leaders from calling this a major victory for the future.
“Today, we are ending the violence and destruction, and the whole region is starting a new chapter filled with hope and chances,” said US President Donald Trump on Friday.
Standing with Vice-President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and representatives from DR Congo and Rwanda in the Oval Office, Trump described the peace treaty as “a glorious triumph.”
“This is a huge step forward,” Trump stated just before he signed the peace treaty that had already been signed by the African delegates earlier.
The agreement was officially signed by the foreign ministers of Congo and Rwanda at the US State Department.
