UPND Makes Strides Against Caderism, but Governance Still Disappoints – Saboi Imboela
UPND Makes Strides
Lusaka – July 27, 2025-National Democratic Congress (NDC) president Saboi Imboela has acknowledged the United Party for National Development (UPND) government’s efforts in reducing caderism and political violence across the country, describing the progress as a notable achievement. However, she expressed concern over what she described as weak and underwhelming governance.
Speaking in an interview on Thursday, Imboela commended the UPND for making headway in addressing political violence, a long-standing issue in Zambia’s political landscape.
“In terms of caderism and violence, the UPND has definitely made some positive strides,” Imboela said. “Although they have not completely eliminated the problem, it’s clear that these issues have been significantly reduced.”
She noted a significant decline in election-related violence, which she described as a key indicator of progress. “We no longer see the kind of election-related violence we witnessed in the past, where people could lose their lives. There’s a noticeable difference in this regard, and for that, I believe the government deserves some credit,” Imboela added.
Despite this progress, Imboela pointed out that the UPND government still falls short in other critical areas of leadership and governance. She urged the administration to channel the same energy used in reducing caderism toward improving service delivery, accountability, and economic management.
“While it is commendable that they have made headway in fighting caderism, governance as a whole has been disappointing. The people expected more in terms of leadership and effective policies,” she said.
Imboela’s remarks come amid ongoing national debates on the UPND’s performance since taking office in 2021. While the ruling party has received praise for restoring peace in many communities, critics have raised concerns about unemployment, the rising cost of living, and perceived delays in delivering campaign promises.
As Zambia gears up for future electoral cycles, political analysts believe that the government’s ability to sustain peace and improve governance will be key in shaping public perception and voter confidence.
