The Zambia Air Force (ZAF), along with the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), has kicked off a major national food relief operation in Mpika District to address serious food shortages impacting vulnerable communities.
This initiative is part of the 2025 National Food Relief Programme, which aims to provide emergency food supplies to households in remote and difficult-to-access areas throughout the country.
During the launch event at Mpika Airstrip on Wednesday, September 3, DMMU National Coordinator Norman Chipakupaku emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring that no community facing food insecurity is overlooked.
“The government is working hard to deliver timely help to the affected regions. This operation is vital for stabilizing households suffering from food shortages and making sure that every Zambian has access to essential needs,” Chipakupaku stated.
ZAF Deputy Commander and Chief of Air Staff, Major General Henry Chiwaya, assured full support from the Air Force, stressing the significance of cooperation between military and civilian sectors in national relief efforts.
“The Air Force is prepared to provide airlift support to reach remote areas where road access is difficult. Through this coordinated effort, we aim to deliver aid quickly and efficiently,” Maj. Gen. Chiwaya mentioned.
Mpika District Commissioner David Siame expressed appreciation to the government for focusing on the district, pointing out that this intervention would help stabilize communities struggling with hunger.
According to ZAF, relief operations have already begun, with the Nabwalya catchment area in Muchinga Province receiving the first batch of food aid. Out of the 230 metric tonnes of maize set for distribution, an initial 50 metric tonnes was sent out right after the launch.
