We just want to follow the rules of diplomacy, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Mulambo Haimbe.
He explained that Zambia is serious about the issue of missing medical supplies but believes that proper diplomatic procedures should be respected when dealing with such matters.
This comes after the US decided to stop over K1 billion in health funding due to concerns about missing drugs, a decision announced by US Ambassador Michael Gonzales.
Haimbe emphasized that while Zambia values its relationship with the US, the way the information was shared was not appropriate according to diplomatic standards.
He mentioned that there are international laws that guide how countries interact, specifically referencing the Vienna Convention of 1961.
Haimbe reassured that he hasn’t silenced anyone but has simply reminded them that diplomacy has its own rules, which even Zambian ambassadors abroad must follow.
He also stated that the government is dedicated to improving its relationships with the US and other countries, and he dismissed claims that Zambia is turning more towards China after the funding cut.
Additionally, he cautioned local politicians against making statements that could harm Zambia’s relationships with its partners.
