In 2024, Zambia saw 23,000 new cases of HIV, with more than a third affecting teens and young adults.

During a meeting about the Global AIDS Strategy for 2026-2031, Acting Health Minister Douglas Sykalima emphasized the need for teamwork to fill gaps and provide services in the battle against HIV/AIDS.

He mentioned that the New Dawn Government, led by President Hakainde Hichilema, is dedicated to eliminating AIDS as a public health issue by 2030.

The Minister reported that the goals of 95-95-95 have been achieved, with 96% of people with HIV aware of their status, 98% of those aware receiving treatment, and 97% of those on treatment managing their viral load.

The HIV prevalence in Zambia stands at 11.5%, meaning about 1,341,098 people are living with HIV, and 1,303,472 are getting treatment.

Mr. Sykalima noted that the Ministry of Health has implemented various strategies like improved prevention, better access to treatment, community involvement, and stronger health systems to combat HIV/AIDS.

United Nations Resident Coordinator Beatrice Muatali praised Zambia’s efforts but stressed the need for more work, assuring the UN’s support in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

National AIDS Council Director-General Kebby Musokotwane stated that the council will keep collaborating with the government and partners to ensure effective actions against HIV/AIDS.
