Zambia, south Africa strengthen relations after Lungu’s death
In a sign of goodwill and diplomatic teamwork, President Hakainde Hichilema welcomed a visit from South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Ozzy Lamola.
This meeting, held at the State House in Lusaka, allowed Minister Lamola to share heartfelt condolences from President Cyril Ramaphosa and the people of South Africa regarding the death of Zambia’s 6th Republican President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu.
During their discussion, President Hichilema and Minister Lamola had a respectful and important conversation about the burial plans for the late President Lungu. Both leaders confirmed Zambia’s strong belief that President Lungu should be buried in his home country, the Republic of Zambia.
This decision shows the nation’s wish to honor its former leader and give him a respectful farewell.
President Hichilema also took a moment to thank President Ramaphosa for the kindness and care shown to the late President during his illness.
The people of Zambia were grateful for the support and compassion from the South African government, which highlighted the strong friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
Additionally, President Hichilema expressed his apologies to the South African National Defence Force for the unexpected difficulties related to bringing President Lungu’s remains back home on June 18, 2025.
This apology emphasized Zambia’s dedication to keeping good relations with its neighbor and preventing any unnecessary conflicts.
The meeting between President Hichilema and Minister Lamola showcased the strong ties between Zambia and South Africa.
